Human Rights Committee

Do you care deeply about fairness, inclusion and the dignity of every worker? Are you passionate about social justice, equity, and building a better future for all? Do you follow current events and believe in the power of collective action to drive meaningful change?

The Human Rights Committee exists to ensure that every member of our union is seen, heard, and respected. Our union reflects the rich diversity of Canada and we believe that every worker, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, age or disability deserves to experience a union and workplace free from unintentional barriers and exclusion or intentional discrimination and harassment.

Steelworkers have a proud legacy of fighting for human rights, in our workplaces and across society. Through advocacy and solidarity, we’ve helped to secure landmark legislation in Ontario on equal pay, anti-harassment protections, and employment equity. With our employer, our efforts have given rise to equal pay and social equity policies that benefit our members every day.

Our work is not finished.

This committee is dedicated to advancing Human Rights in practical and powerful ways. We seek to identify issues that affect our members, families and communities and work to address them through education, action and support. Human rights are central to workplace and union rights. It’s part of everything we do.

At Local 2010, our current focus includes accessibility and disability rights, Indigenous rights, and LGBT+ inclusion, both on campus and throughout our community. We invite all members to get involved, share your voice, and help to shape a union that reflects and uplifts everyone.
